Using AI to Diagnose Water Consumption Patterns

Smart water system management is a priority for facilities. Leaks and burst or broken pipes can cause expensive water damage if not quickly detected, but old-fashioned monitoring methods give managers a few ways to act in a timely manner.

Innovations in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning mean new ways to monitor water system operations and respond in real time. By applying deep learning techniques to usage data, AI can be used to detect problems and inconsistencies in water usage without the need for maintenance staff to manually check meters or inspect miles of pipe.

By adapting to local usage patterns, AI-enabled water management systems can instantly alert facility managers to anomalies in consumption, allowing them to detect waste, pipe breaks or other malfunctions in the plumbing.

AI-Powered Water Management

WINT Water Intelligence technology applies deep learning techniques to water system management. The units are IoT-enabled, AI-powered devices that simplify water management by performing real-time flow analysis to monitor consumption and detect problems. The devices use high-speed, optimized cellular data connections.

Once installed, the WINT units use advanced machine learning algorithms to analyze the normal water flow patterns for the specific location on a granular level. This includes not only how much water is normally used to fill pools or in kitchens and bathrooms but when it is used as well. In addition, WINT compares your facility’s water usage to average consumption patterns by checking them against an extensive database of water use applications.

Once baselines are established, WINT begins analyzing minute details of water system performance in real time, applying AI and deep learning to detect usage anomalies. Is a pool not filling correctly? Is there a spike in water usage from an unexpected source? The AI algorithms can extrapolate the source of the leak or problem, allowing maintenance staff to quickly address any issues.

Facilities are increasingly putting a premium on sustainability. Water leaking into the sewage system or outdoors can account for more than 25 percent of water consumption for businesses. WINT uses machine learning to give facility managers the real-time information needed to reduce water waste.

WINT puts AI to work

The Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno, Nevada, relies on WINT smart water-metering devices to reduce consumption and prevent damage from leaks. In December, crews installed 30 WINT units in the Atlantis. The meters analyzed 90 days of water usage on the property, recording normal patterns down to the minute. The moment that WINT meters detect anomalous details that fall outside of normal behavior, WINT sends real-time alerts to the maintenance staff about the potential problem.

Quoted in the Northern Nevada Business View, Perry Sanders, director of engineering at the Atlantis, said:

“I know immediately — I literally get an alert to my cellphone. The old way was just a plain meter. I go through, say, January, and (on) February 15, I get my water bill. Well, then it’s too late; I’ve already had a leak for six weeks. That’s really a reactive, lagging indicator. Where this (with smart meters) is a proactive, leading indicator.”

Because burst pipes can lead to severe water damage to infrastructure and equipment, WINT devices can be programmed to automatically shut off the water when an emergency is detected.

The all-in-one water management solution for commercial facility management teams, WINT units use machine learning and AI to help facilities save water and reduce the chance of expensive water damage from leaks.
